Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before booking your first lesson.
- How many driving lessons will I need?
- The DVSA recommends an average of 45 hours of professional tuition, plus around 22 hours of private practice. In reality, this varies quite a bit depending on your natural aptitude, how regularly you have lessons, and whether you practise in between. We tailor a structured plan for each pupil and track your progress session by session.
- Should I learn in an automatic or a manual car?
- It depends on your goals. A manual licence lets you drive any car — automatic or manual. An automatic licence restricts you to automatic vehicles only. That said, many learners find automatic much easier and less stressful, and pass more quickly as a result. We are happy to discuss which suits your situation best.
- Where is the driving test centre near Redhill?
- The local DVSA practical test centre is Redhill Driving Test Centre. We cover all the test routes used from this centre, so your lessons will be conducted on the same roads you will face on test day.
- Do you help with the theory test?
- We provide guidance and recommend the best resources to study. The theory test itself is booked separately through the DVSA website. We strongly recommend passing the theory test before — or at least during — your practical lessons, as it reinforces what you are learning on the road.
- Can I pay for lessons as I go, or do I need a block booking?
- You can pay per lesson if you prefer. Block bookings simply offer better value — the more hours you book upfront, the more you save per hour. Block bookings are non-refundable but are fully transferable between lesson times if you need to rearrange.
- What is the minimum age to start driving lessons?
- You must be at least 17 years old to drive on public roads in the UK. You can apply for your provisional driving licence from 15 years and 9 months old, so it is worth doing that ahead of your 17th birthday.
- What is your cancellation policy?
- We ask for at least 48 hours notice to cancel or rearrange a lesson. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged at the full lesson rate. We understand that genuine emergencies happen and will always try to be reasonable in those circumstances.
- Where will you pick me up from?
- We pick up from your home, workplace, school, or college within our coverage area — Redhill, Reigate, Merstham, Horley, Nutfield, Woodhatch, and Tadworth. Contact us to confirm your address before booking your first lesson.
- Is an intensive driving course right for me?
- Intensive courses are ideal if you need to pass quickly — for a new job, relocation, or simply to get on the road as fast as possible. They work best for motivated learners who can commit several hours a day. Some prior experience or theory test preparation is helpful. If you prefer a steadier pace, weekly lessons may suit you better.
- What happens in my first lesson?
- Your first lesson is all about getting comfortable. We start with the basics — mirrors, controls, and safety checks — then move at a pace that suits you. There is no pressure; the aim is for you to feel confident and in control from the very start.
